Version 0.4.0 · macOS 14 Sonoma or later · Free under the MIT license

Everything in one app

One tool for every kind of difference

From a quick look at two config files to merging a whole project, Mergeloom covers the comparisons you do every day.

Files and text

Side-by-side compare with word-level highlights, syntax coloring for 23 languages, editing in both panes, and one-click copying of changes across.

Folders and sync

Compare whole folder trees, filter by name, size or date, then update or mirror one side. Every sync shows a preview first.

Three-way merge

Resolve conflicts against a common base, one conflict at a time, or open any file with conflict markers. Merges folders too.

Git built in

Compare with HEAD, browse working-copy changes, or pick any two branches, tags or commits and see every file that differs.

JSON, XML and tables

Format and compare JSON and XML, list the keys that changed, and match CSV rows by a key column to see each changed cell.

Images and bytes

Swipe, side-by-side and difference views for images, and a byte-by-byte hex compare for binary files.

Documents and archives

Compare the wording of Word, RTF, OpenDocument and PDF files, and look inside ZIP archives as if they were folders.

Patches and reports

Export a standard .diff patch, an HTML report of a file or folder comparison, or print it.

Command line

Install the mergeloom tool and use it from Terminal, or set it up as your git difftool and mergetool.

Built on principles

Your files stay yours

Offline and private

No account, no cloud, no analytics. Your files never leave your Mac. The only network request is an update check, and only if you allow it.

Careful with your files

Comparing never changes anything. Saves are atomic, replaced files go to the Trash, and anything destructive asks first.

Truly native

Built with Swift, SwiftUI and AppKit. Light and dark mode, full keyboard control, and smooth scrolling through very large files.

For developers

At home in Terminal and Git

Choose Mergeloom ▸ Install Command Line Tool… and the mergeloom command is ready. The installer also gives you the lines to make it your Git diff and merge tool, with --wait so Git waits until you close the window.

  • Compare files or folders from anywhere
  • Three-way merge straight into an output file
  • Works as git difftool and mergetool
Terminal

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Mergeloom really free?

Yes. Mergeloom is free under the MIT license. There is no trial, no subscription, no ads and no account to create.

Is Mergeloom an alternative to Beyond Compare, WinMerge or Meld on Mac?

Yes. Mergeloom covers the same everyday work: side-by-side file and text comparison, folder comparison and sync, and three-way merge. It is built natively for macOS with SwiftUI and AppKit, and it is free.

Does Mergeloom upload my files anywhere?

No. Everything happens on your Mac. Mergeloom has no account, no cloud and no analytics. The only network request is the check for updates, and Mergeloom checks automatically only if you allow it.

What can Mergeloom compare?

Text and source code with syntax coloring for 23 languages, whole folders, JSON, XML, CSV and TSV tables, images, binary files byte by byte, the text of Word, RTF, OpenDocument and PDF files, and ZIP archives.

Can I use Mergeloom as my Git diff and merge tool?

Yes. Choose Mergeloom ▸ Install Command Line Tool, and the installer gives you the git config lines to use mergeloom with git difftool and git mergetool. Mergeloom can also show your working-copy changes and compare any two branches, tags or commits.

Which Macs does Mergeloom run on?

Mergeloom needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later and is built for Apple Silicon Macs.

Why does macOS say it could not verify Mergeloom?

Mergeloom is not notarized by Apple yet. The first time you open it, close that message, go to System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. You only need to do this once.
